Kevin made an unfortunate error in saying that the tea sells for £5.00 per kg - he meant to say that it cost £5.25 for 50g. It would be impossible to buy genuine Silver Needle for £5 per kg – the cost of production is far too high!
The price of Silver Needle is determined by the following factors: difficult picking of top bud only of one variety of tea plant - Da Bai or 'Big White' in Fuding, in Fujian Province China.
It is picked early April before the bud has opened - before it has even developed chlorophyll content. It must be sun dried or dried indoors if it is raining on the day of production. The small size of the area where the tea grows, the very skilled, difficult and early spring picking and hand processing sets the price.
